On October 4, 2026, a multi-agency effort involving the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO) K9 unit, Bishop Police Department, Mono County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, and Bureau of Land Management led to the apprehension of a suspect who had fled after a high-speed pursuit south of Big Pine. Lane Turner was taken into custody following a K9 track and was subsequently booked into Inyo County Jail on numerous charges, including felony evading and receiving stolen property.
The incident began at approximately 9:41 p.m. when Inyo County Sheriff’s Office personnel attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a motorcycle traveling on U.S. Highway 395 south of Big Pine. The rider of the motorcycle failed to yield to law enforcement and fled the scene. During the initial evasion, the suspect reached speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour before turning onto dirt roads. Due to unsafe road and visibility conditions, Sheriff’s Office personnel made the decision to discontinue the active pursuit for safety reasons.
Law enforcement later located the motorcycle, which appeared to have crashed into a barbed-wire fence. The rider had evidently fled the scene on foot after the crash. Further investigation revealed that the motorcycle had been reported as stolen. With the motorcycle located and the suspect on foot, a broad perimeter was quickly established by the assisting agencies to contain the search area.
An Inyo County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit was then deployed to track the suspect. Starting from the location where the motorcycle was found, the K9 successfully followed the suspect's trail for approximately three-quarters of a mile through the surrounding terrain. This track led law enforcement personnel directly to the suspect, identified as Lane Turner, who was then taken into custody without further incident.
Turner faces a range of charges stemming from the incident. Felony charges include reckless driving (VC 23103(a)), felony evading a peace officer (VC 2800.2(a)), and receiving or possessing known stolen property (PC 496(a)). He also faces misdemeanor charges for driving without a valid driver’s license (VC 12500(c)) and resisting or delaying a peace officer (PC 148(a)(1)). Additionally, Turner was cited for several infractions: unsafe turn or lane change (VC 22107), failure to signal (VC 22108), speed in excess of 100 mph (VC 22348(b)), and required vehicle taillamp violation (VC 24600(a)).
The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office extended its gratitude to the Bishop Police Department, Mono County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, and Bureau of Land Management for their critical assistance and coordinated efforts during the search and apprehension. The Sheriff's Office also noted that this incident underscored the significant value of K9 capabilities and strong interagency partnerships in ensuring community safety. As with all arrests, Lane Turner is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
