Bishop Union High School (BUHS) experienced a campus closure for all students and staff on Monday, October 19th, after a credible safety concern, first reported over the weekend, was directed towards some members of its school community. By 9 AM that morning, the Bishop Police Department confirmed that the individual responsible for the threat had been taken into custody, effectively resolving the situation and eliminating any active threat to the school community.
The Bishop Unified School District (BUSD) had announced the difficult decision to close the BUHS campus on Monday due to the unresolved nature of the safety concern. This measure was taken after the school, throughout the weekend, worked closely with law enforcement regarding the developing situation. The individual involved had previously been prohibited from entering any campus or participating in any school activity at any time.
As a precautionary step, an increased law enforcement presence was visible on the campuses of Bishop Elementary School (BES) and Home Street Middle School (HSMS) on Monday. BUSD clarified that while these measures were taken, other BUSD school sites were not identified as being at risk in this situation. Decisions regarding the operational status of each site were made based on the information available and in coordination with law enforcement agencies, ensuring that those campuses remained open.
Throughout the process, BUSD authorities worked in close collaboration with the Bishop Police Department and other local law enforcement partners. This cooperation allowed for a thorough assessment of the situation, informed decision-making, and the implementation of appropriate steps to prioritize the safety and well-being of students, staff, and the broader community. The safety concerns were specifically targeted at individuals within Bishop Union High School.
The district acknowledged that the situation caused concern and uncertainty for many families in the community. BUSD assured residents that every decision made was done thoughtfully and responsibly, always prioritizing the safety of the school community. Officials emphasized their understanding of the weight of these decisions and their commitment to protecting students and staff very seriously.
BUSD expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts and support provided by local law enforcement agencies. Additionally, the district thanked families for their patience, trust, and understanding demonstrated throughout the period of heightened alert and resolution. The district highlighted the collective effort needed to maintain the safety of the school community.
