An Olancha resident was recently taken into custody by Inyo County Sheriff’s deputies following a reported shooting incident that occurred in the community. The arrest came after deputies responded to multiple reports of gunshots on Monday evening, September 28, leading to a subsequent investigation and apprehension.
According to a press release issued by the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office on September 29, deputies were initially dispatched to an Olancha residence at approximately 8:38 p.m. on September 28. The dispatch was prompted by an initial report of gunshots heard in the area, indicating a potential disturbance requiring immediate law enforcement attention.
The situation escalated with further reports that detailed a more serious turn of events. It was later reported that a dog had been shot and killed within the yard of the residence that deputies were called to. Additionally, supplementary reports indicated that gunshots had also been heard from near the Mobile gas station, suggesting a broader area of impact for the reported incident.
Deputies conducted a thorough search of the vicinity and successfully located the suspect in a field situated near the reported residence. The individual was identified as James Knight of Olancha. Law enforcement personnel then issued clear verbal commands, which Knight complied with, leading to his arrest without incident. This careful approach helped to ensure the safe apprehension of the individual involved.
Following his detention, Knight informed deputies that he had discarded the firearm allegedly used during the reported crime. To aid in the critical task of evidence recovery, K9 Envar was deployed to the scene. The police dog proved instrumental in the investigation, successfully locating the weapon approximately 20 to 30 feet away from the precise location where Knight had been detained. The recovery of the firearm represents a significant development in the ongoing case.
After his arrest, James Knight was transported to the Inyo County Jail. There, he was formally booked on four distinct felony charges.
