Inyo County Sheriff’s deputies apprehended an Olancha resident Monday evening, September 28, following a reported shooting incident that included accounts of gunshots and the killing of a dog in the community. James Knight, an Olancha resident, was taken into custody in connection with the events that unfolded.
According to a press release issued by the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office on September 29, deputies were dispatched to an Olancha residence at approximately 8:38 p.m. The initial call reported gunshots in the area, prompting a prompt response from law enforcement officials. As deputies investigated, additional details emerged, with subsequent reports indicating that a dog had been shot and killed within the residence's yard. Further, reports of gunshots were also made from the vicinity of the Mobile gas station, suggesting a broader area of concern during the incident.
Deputies subsequently located James Knight in a field positioned near the reported residence. Upon making contact, deputies issued verbal commands, and Knight was arrested without incident. This quick apprehension allowed law enforcement to secure the scene and continue their investigation into the reported events.
Following his detention, Knight informed deputies that he had discarded a gun, which he indicated was used in the reported crime. This crucial information prompted a further search effort. K9 Envar was deployed to assist, and the police dog successfully located the firearm. The weapon was found approximately 20 to 30 feet away from the precise location where Knight had been detained by deputies, providing a key piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation.
James Knight was later booked at the Inyo County Jail. He faces four felony charges related to the incident. The specific nature of these charges was not detailed in the Sheriff’s Office release.
