An Olancha resident was arrested Monday evening after Inyo County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported shooting incident. During the course of events, it was later reported that a dog had been shot and killed in a residence’s yard. The individual apprehended was identified as James Knight of Olancha, who was taken into custody without incident in a field near the reported scene.

According to an official release issued by the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office on September 29, deputies were initially dispatched to an Olancha residence at approximately 8:38 p.m. on September 28. This dispatch followed the receipt of multiple reports regarding gunshots heard in the community. As the investigation unfolded, deputies received additional information stating that a dog had been fatally shot within the confines of the residence’s yard. Reports of gunfire were also received from an area close to the local Mobile gas station, indicating a broader scope of the reported incident within Olancha.

In their response, Inyo County Sheriff's deputies actively sought out the individual involved in the reported disturbance. They successfully located James Knight, a resident of Olancha, in a field that was situated in close proximity to the initial residence where the gunshots were first reported. Upon encountering the suspect, deputies issued verbal commands, which Knight complied with, leading to his arrest without any further incident or resistance. This swift and peaceful apprehension was a key step in resolving the immediate situation on Monday evening.

Following his arrest, Mr. Knight provided information to the deputies indicating that he had discarded a gun. He specified that this firearm was the one allegedly used in connection with the reported shooting incident. To aid in the recovery of this crucial piece of evidence, K9 Envar, a specialized canine unit with the Sheriff's Office, was deployed. K9 Envar proved successful in its task, locating the discarded gun approximately 20 to 30 feet away from the specific spot where Knight had been detained by law enforcement personnel. The recovery of the weapon is an important development in the ongoing investigation.

James Knight was subsequently transported to the Inyo County Jail, where he underwent the booking process. He faces serious legal repercussions, having been booked on four distinct felony charges. These charges are directly related to the reported shooting incident that prompted the law enforcement response in Olancha.

The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office has emphasized that the investigation into these events is active and ongoing. As part of their standard procedure, and to ensure the integrity of the investigative process, the Sheriff's Office noted in their release that no further identifying information beyond what has already been disclosed will be released at the present time. It is a fundamental principle of the justice system that all suspects, including James Knight, are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty in a court of law. The Sheriff's Office continues its work to gather all facts and evidence pertaining to this significant public safety matter in the community of Olancha.
