On Friday, October 16, the Bishop Union High School Broncos football team suffered a 30-14 defeat at the hands of the Boron Bobcats. The game, held on Homecoming night for Bishop, was a High Desert League contest. Despite the festive atmosphere and a determined effort, the Broncos were unable to secure a victory against their league rivals.
The contest began with a promising display from Bishop Union, as the Broncos battled Boron to a 7-7 tie by halftime. This strong showing kept the Homecoming crowd engaged and hopeful for a second-half surge. However, following the intermission, the Boron Bobcats found their offensive rhythm, allowing them to pull away from Bishop Union and ultimately secure the victory.
Even in defeat, Bishop Union showcased several individual standout performances on offense. Quarterback Wyatt Miears completed 6 of his 16 pass attempts, accumulating 120 yards and throwing two touchdowns. His primary target was DeVaun Mitchell, who demonstrated his receiving prowess by hauling in four receptions for an impressive 101 yards and scoring one touchdown. Additionally, Clifton Paco contributed to the Broncos' scoring efforts with an 11-yard touchdown reception.
The Broncos' defense also had notable contributions from multiple players throughout the game. Zane Nicholson led the defensive unit with seven solo tackles, also recording a tackle for loss and half a sack. Dom Dondero delivered a strong performance as well, making six solo tackles, contributing one sack, and successfully blocking a punt. Kole Barlow was another key defender, tallying six solo tackles and assisting on three others.
Further defensive efforts came from Daxen Svacina, who finished with five solo tackles, a tackle for loss, and half a sack. DeVaun Mitchell, contributing on both sides of the ball, added four solo tackles. Brady Johnson recorded three solo tackles and also broke up a pass. Heath Fuller and Oscar Henriquez each contributed three solo tackles. Jaden Jimenez made two solo tackles, including one for a loss, along with two assists, while Jasper Barnes registered a sack.
With the Homecoming game behind them, the Bishop Union Broncos have one game remaining on their regular-season schedule. The team will travel on Friday, October 23, to face California City for their final regular-season matchup. A previously scheduled game against Rosamond will not take place, as Rosamond forfeited the contest.
