The Bishop Broncos tennis team came exceptionally close to achieving a clean sweep in their home match against Desert on Thursday, falling short by just a single tie-break. The team demonstrated resilience and adaptability, stepping up to fill gaps created by the absence of three key players.
Freshman Rue Cleland, who typically plays in the number six singles position, adjusted to the number five spot for the match due to the team's reduced roster. Cleland's match was a hard-fought contest that ultimately resulted in the team's sole loss, decided in a tie-break. She won her second set 6-4 after dropping the first set 5-7, forcing a decisive third-set tie-break. The tie-break concluded with a score of 4-10 in favor of her opponent, marking Bishop's closest brush with a perfect record for the day.
Fellow player Belle Cleland also stepped up to play singles, navigating a challenging match that extended to two tie-breaks. Belle Cleland secured her first set with a score of 7-5. Her opponent then rallied to take the second set in a tie-break, with Belle Cleland losing 4-7. However, Belle Cleland demonstrated strong resolve, ultimately winning the decisive final tie-break with a commanding score of 10-1, adding a crucial singles point for the Broncos.
Kinlei Romero contributed another strong singles performance, winning her match in straight sets with consistent scores of 6-4, 6-4. These singles victories highlighted the team's depth and individual strength, particularly given the adjustments required for the day's lineup.
The Broncos continued their dominant performance in doubles play. The pairing of Kinlei Romero and Avery Mcgraw secured a convincing victory, winning their match with set scores of 6-2, 6-3. Lila Santana and Leah Morrison also delivered a strong doubles performance, defeating their opponents with scores of 6-1, 6-2, showcasing effective teamwork and execution.
Avenly Stehlik, a freshman and new addition to the team, celebrated a significant milestone during the Desert match. Paired with Xochitl Lopez, Stehlik earned her first win as a Bronco. This debut victory for the new team member further underscored the collective effort and success of the Bishop tennis squad against Desert.
The Bishop Broncos tennis team will continue their season with an upcoming away match, scheduled to play in Rosamond on Tuesday.
