Robert Ward Mayhugh, a 75-year-old resident of Bishop, passed away on October 1, 2026. Mayhugh, who lived a life deeply connected to the Owens Valley and White Mountains, was known for his love of family, the outdoors, and sharing stories with friends. A celebration of his life is planned for November 21, 2026, in Bishop.

Born on April 25, 1951, in Glendale, California, Mayhugh moved to Bishop as a young boy with his parents, William and Dorothy Mayhugh. He was the second of five sons, alongside his brothers Roy, Dick, Gary, and Grant. During their early days, he and his brothers explored the Owens Valley extensively, driving on dirt roads and under open skies, which he described as the beginning of a lifetime of adventure. Mayhugh graduated from Bishop Union High School in 1970 and later attended college in Chico before the Owens Valley called him home.

Upon his return to Bishop, Mayhugh met JoAnn, the love of his life, around a campfire up at Coyote. They married on February 16, 1974, and together raised their two children, Lance and Jennifer. Mayhugh loved his family deeply and shared his passion for the outdoors with them. He took them on numerous trips across the Owens Valley for hunting, camping, hiking, quad riding, and exploring the region's history and diverse wildlife. These shared experiences became cherished memories for his family.

The White Mountains held a special significance for Mayhugh, serving as his "home away from home" and a place where he found profound peace. He possessed an intimate knowledge of its canyons and ridgelines, which he enjoyed passing on to anyone willing to listen. Mayhugh also valued his friendships and conversations, often spending hours "shooting the bull" with good friends. These talks, which frequently revolved around "the old days" or hunting season tales described as "full of laughter and a little exaggeration," were a gift to those who joined him.

Mayhugh is survived by his wife, JoAnn; his son, Lance, and his wife, Shelley; and his daughter, Jennifer. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Connor and his wife, Hallie, Gavin, and Layton, as well as his great-grandson, Anakin.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Elks Lodge, located at 151 E. Line Street in Bishop. Lunch will be provided, and guests are invited to contribute by bringing a side dish or dessert to share. Attendees are encouraged to come prepared to share stories about Mayhugh, as "Bob would have wanted it that way."
